Public Ownership For Railways Protest

Railway protests on January 5, calling for Public Ownership

actionforrail-twitter.pngOn Friday January the 2nd  train fares are due to increase again. We already have some of the most expensive fares in Europe. We also have the most fragmented service, and it is the case that the government is now subsiding railways (and the franchises) MORE than when British Rail was de-nationalised. Between 1997 -2012 Virgin Trains’ West Coast Mainline paid £500 million in dividends after pocketing£2,5 billion in subsidies. By contrast, the publicly owned East Coast Mainline has returned nearly £1bn to the government since 2009.The arguments for public ownership are overwhelming.

The environmental case for switching to rail and other public transport is also overwhelming.

Hence, with the support of Action for Rail, the Peoples Assembly are teaming up Bring Back British Rail, Compass, the Campaign against Climate Change, We Own It,  and a variety of local groups to organise leafleting of commuters at railways stations on Monday January 5th.

Please help at one of the following stations:

Note on reporting actions.

For those of you who are involved on Monday please provide feedback by posting to afrailsupporters@googlegroups.com or to the Bring Back British Rail Facebook site.

NOTE on follow-up.

Many of us are planning similar and better actions in the near future. April the First seems to be a good day, not only is this April Fools Day, and we must expose how the government have tried to fool us that the railway franchises are a good thing, but also, I believe, it is the 21st anniversary of the decree to privatise the rail service.

To everyone where there are no actions this time round, email Peter and help organise the next day of action at your local station.

I did, got good media coverage and support from local PA, Labour, Green Party, rail campaigners and Unison members. Its easy to organise, lots of help available and very worthwhile ;-)

Nothing is happening near where I am (Grays), also there’s no way I can afford to travel on the train/tube before 9.30am! :(

Hi Graham, sorry to hear about your experience. Swindon People’s Assembly did organise one evening demo at the rail station which we attended, so I am not sure how the mix up occurred. We are demonstrating again on Monday 5th Jan, 5pm-7pm at the rail station and I assure you there will be people there. There is great enthusiasm in SPA and we have organised many successful events and would welcome your participation. Kate linnegar (secretary SPA)

    Hi Graham

I am sure that people in Swindon are organising this time around. I can send you their details if you wish, but see the main PA summary of actions. Email me at peterfrobinson@ntlworld.com

If you are taking part, don’t forget to email your local newspapers, radio stations and regional TV news – we got good coverage in Stoke in August just from sending a few emails the day before.

I broke my rule of not using facebook to post this comment, as I usually have the account dormant. I hate facebook!

I turned up with a placard for one of the last Swindon protests on the correct day and time, on a frosty early morning, and I felt a right Charlie as I stood there on my own, as not another living sole turned up.

I felt like the proverbial sandwich man, ‘THE END IS NIGH’!

I put it down to Swindon apathy, and have not bothered with any other protests since, even though I feel passionately about the cause.
