The North East People's Assembly was created in March, we had a public meeting in May which attracted 200 people, followed by an all day launch conference in September, which included plenary sessions and workshops in the mould of the national event in June; an unique evening entertainment show was also included; this brought in more than 500.
The amount of interest in these events led to no less than 6 local assemblies being created in Berwick Upon-Tweed, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Durham & Teesside. More local groups are expected to be set up in the near future, creating a truly grass roots movement.
Durham Peoples Assembly held a large public meeting before the Miners Gala at Durham Miners Hall in July, 200 attended this. 15 coaches travelled down to the Manchester NHS demo in late September. We have also actively supported strike action all over the region and supported successful campaigns against public service cuts. This support has been reflected by several Trade Unions and other organisations, who have supported and have helped fund our activities.
Our Mark Steel gig on Halloween attracted over 300 people and on November 5th we had 4 demonstrations in Newcastle, Durham, Middlesbrough & Darlington; the Middlesbrough event making the front page of The Morning Star. We have a large number of active supporters from all walks of life; a range of parties, trade unions and campaign groups. The most active of whom attend regular regional North East group meetings from all over the area; planning future events.
We have managed to join up existing resistance to the cuts in our region, but also discovering and energising people who have never been involved in activism before; some of whom are here today.
