Noisy Sunderland protesters in city centre ATOS demonstration

PROTESTERS have taken to the streets of Sunderland to as part of a nationwide demonstration against Government benefits assessments for the sick and disabled.

Members of the Sunderland People’s Assembly Against Austerity gathered outside the ATOS Healthcare assessment centre near Market Square yesterday.

A minute’s noise was followed by a minute’s silence to remember those who have died since having their Employment and Support Allowance stopped.

Group member Mark Tyers said: “We handed out hundreds of flyers to educate passers-by about what’s going on and what they can do about it. Most people who walked past had a read of the placards and came over to find out what this company and the government are doing to tens of thousands of disabled and sick people.”

The group will hold a public meeting at Age Concern in Stockton Road at 7pm on Wednesday.

ATOS, carries out the controversial “fitness for work” tests, which are used to gauge eligibility for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Incapacity Benefit.
