PILES of food were displayed outside Downing Street today on the eve of the Tories’ Budget to show the effects of the government’s public funding cuts.
The People's Assembly Against Austerity bought the huge collection of food and women's sanitary items, which will be donated to foodbanks. It also carried out protests across the country, encouraging those attending to bring donations with them.Read more
Cambridge anti-austerity activists will donate a car bootful of goods to Cambridge City Foodbank, in protest at the winter food crisis they are concerned will follow the Conservative government's rollout of the Universal Credit benefit (meant to replace six existing means-tested benefits) and at the public sector pay cap.Read more
One of the cruellest effects of the austerity programme pursued by the coalition and Conservative governments since 2010 has been the surge in the number of us who turn in destitution to food banks. In 2008/9, the Trussell Trust provided 29,000 emergency food supplies; in 2016/17, it provided 1.2 million.Read more
