I attended The People’s Assembly recall meeting in London, as a delegate for both the Fife and the Scottish People’s Assembly.  In attendance were over 600 delegates from across the UK. The People’s Assembly Against Austerity (PAAA) was set up 9 months and now has 100 Assemblies all over the UK. Fife Trades Union Council started the first one in Scotland.

The PAAA was set up by Tony Benn, The Coalition of Resistance and most of the main Trade Unions, as a means of building a movement to resist the continued attack on workers, the poor, the disabled and the unemployed, who are faced with a complete lack of political representation within Westminster. A crisis of capital, in 2008, created by the financial institutions, has been changed into a crisis of welfare and public services.

All the main political parties have initiated and agreed on even further austerity, for at least another 5 years. This austerity, or cuts as it really means, is aimed at those on welfare, both in and out of work. The great lie is that welfare goes to the unemployed, where in reality the vast majority of welfare goes to those in work and to private landlords who are charging inflated rents in order to bleed the welfare system.  Further Austerity means more privatisation, more cuts to public jobs and services and more attacks on the welfare state and the NHS.

The PAAA believes there is no need for this austerity. The conference has adopted The People’s Charter, that calls for a fairer economy for a fairer Britain, more and better jobs, decent homes for all, protect and improve our public services-no cuts, fairness and justice and to build a secure and sustainable future for all.

The PAAA are building a mass movement to affect change for the betterment of the majority in the country, not as at present, an economy that is only increasing the wealth of the 10% at the top end of society. I urge everyone to get involved in the People’s Assembly. We have no political allegiance to any political party or organisation and work with all other campaign groups, such as the Anti Bedroom Tax movement, DEPAC, Stop the War, War on Want etc. For more information contact peoplesassemblyfife@gmail.com or on Facebook, The Peoples Assembly Fife, for further information.
