Strike in the universities

Wednesday 25 May / 12.30 p.m. / Wesley Methodist Church, Christ's Pieces, Cambridge CB1 1LG

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) on the academic and support staffs at Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Cambridge will strike tomorrow and the next day for better pay, gender equality, and improved job security. The employers' national offer of a 1.1 per cent pay rise doesn't address a decline of 14.5 per cent in the real value of average pay in higher education since 2009, and they have refused to offer any action on the stubborn gender pay gap or their increasing use of casual contracts.

On Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 May the Anglia Ruskin staff will picket on East Road from 8 a.m.; the University of Cambridge staff will picket at the university's Old Schools, Downing, and Sidgwick sites among others from 7 a.m.

On Wednesday both will meet at 12.15 p.m. outside Great St Mary's Church to march to their strike rally at 12.30 at the Wesley Methodist Church, with these speakers:

  • Liz Lawrence (UCU National Executive)
  • Sarah Brown (Anglia Ruskin UCU)
  • Waseem Yaqoob (Cambridge UCU)
  • Carina O'Reilly (Anglia Ruskin UCU, Labour Party councillor)
  • Jon Duveen (Cambridgeshire National Union of Teachers)

Cambridge UCU has opened an informative strike blog.
