Minutes of the January CPA meeting

There follow the minutes of our January meeting, which was our annual general meeting for 2018, with the group's constitution as revised there attached. Protest the county cuts

The Conservative-controlled County Council will approve an unexpectedly sharp £35m of cuts for 2018/19 in its meeting on Tuesday 6 February, even as it finally accepts the necessity to raise council tax (alongside the social care precept) to spare people in Cambridgeshire from still worse cuts to the services on which they rely.

Cambridge meets to travel to NHS in Crisis

The People's Assembly and Health Campaigns Together have called a demonstration in London, NHS in Crisis, to demand an end to the Conservatives' deliberate defunding of the service and a fully funded, fully public NHS instead.

Activists donate to food bank in protest at Universal Credit and pay caps

Cambridge anti-austerity activists will donate a car bootful of goods to Cambridge City Foodbank, in protest at the winter food crisis they are concerned will follow the Conservative government's rollout of the Universal Credit benefit (meant to replace six existing means-tested benefits) and at the public sector pay cap.

A letter to the Cambridge News

Dear Sir,

One of the cruellest effects of the austerity programme pursued by the coalition and Conservative governments since 2010 has been the surge in the number of us who turn in destitution to food banks. In 2008/9, the Trussell Trust provided 29,000 emergency food supplies; in 2016/17, it provided 1.2 million.
