Following the national launch of the People’s Assembly campaigners and trade unionists met to begin to plan a Birmingham People’s Assembly launch.
We compiled a list of local trade union leaders, campaigners and cultural figures who supported the call for the People’s Assembly.
Over the summer we distributed 10,000 local People’s Assembly leaflets advertising the TUC NHS demo.
Our launch rally was held on October 24th. Headline speakers were Paul Novak from the TUC, Steve Hart (replacing Len McCluskey) from UNITE, Salma Yaqoob. We had a combination of local trade unionists and campaigners on the platform. 250 people attended the launch with significant contingents of UNITE members and a large group of Bedroom Tax campaigners.
On November 5th around 100 people attended a rally in the city centre with a large group going off with Anonymous campaigners to occupy 2 shark shops for a while.
On December 14th we are planning to work alongside the West Midlands Pensioners group to protest at proposed cuts in free access to trams and trains in the city.
In the New Year we are looking at holding a day of workshops alongside campaigning groups on the Bedroom Tax, Library cuts etc. We are supporting a Birmingham
Trades Council conference on the NHS in February. We are discussing a major event in the summer.
